Hidden Gems of Truro

Victoria Gardens

Hidden away in the centre of Truro, it is difficult to believe that you are still in the heart of the city. Victoria Gardens are home to a mind-boggling variety of plants and the park itself is striking in how well maintained it is. The lush trees provide shelter from the sun and wind, and there is plenty of open space for those who fancy a spot of sunbathing. The gardens are remarkably serene and quiet for being located in the centre of a city, and the only minor disturbance is the occasional train passing on the viaduct far overhead.

There is an abundance of benches and litter bins, even a public toilet, making it an ideal spot to sit and have a picnic, or to stop and eat your lunch. In the summer from 2pm-4pm on Sunday different local brass bands perform at the bandstand in the centre of the park. Entry and seating is entirely free for these events.

Hendra Playing fields are just next to Victoria Gardens, and contain a playground, a skatepark and in summer Various events and activities for children are held there.

Victoria Gardens were laid out in commemoration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee and have been open to the public ever since. They have provided solace and comfort to the people of Truro for over a hundred years, and it is quite humbling to sit and think of all the other countless souls who have come to the Gardens on their lunch breaks over the decades.
It can be a bit difficult to find Victoria Gardens, as you walk up Edward Street, look to your left and you will see a public walkway with bollards in front. Walk along here until you see the entrance on your right. Alternatively if you continue along George Street walking towards the Viaduct, opposite St George's Church you can find the entrance to the Gardens, continue through the small patch of grass to find the Gardens proper. I have included images of the entrances in the slideshow below.

Truro Cathedral

Picture
You may be wondering how Truro's most distinctive landmark can be called a hidden gem - the hidden part is the incredible interior.

Truro Cathedral is a stupendous piece of architecture and regardless of your religious beliefs it is well worth a visit.

The cathedral is a beautiful fixture of the Truro skyline, but the exterior pales in comparison to the sheer presence of the interior. Both humbling and humble the pictures below scarcely do it justice.

The Church runs free guided tours of the cathedral from 11.00am during the week, and their knowledgeable, eloquent tour guides can tailor the tour to your party's interests.

The Church is welcoming and respectful to anyone and everyone, regardless of religion, denomination, colour or creed.

There is an authentic, traditional sweet shop called Pennyworth's right next to the church, a perfect reward for well behaved spouses and children.
